De acuerdo a la Regla 16 del RIPA, maniobra del buque que cede el paso, todo buque que esté obligado a mantenerse apartado de la derrota de otro buque:Under Rule 16, action by give-way vessel, every vessel directed to keep out of the way of another:

• aEncenderá la luz de alcance intermitentemente para avisar del peligro al otro buque.Shall flash her sternlight to warn the other vessel.
• bManiobrará, en lo posible, con anticipación suficiente y de forma decidida para quedar bien franco del otro buque.Shall, so far as possible, take early and substantial action to keep well clear.
